Health and Fitness
"A healthy mind in a healthy body" as the saying goes. We've all heard it, and, for good reason. The pressures faced by the 21st century student are intense and on-going. It is therefore vital that you maintain a reasonable standard of fitness. It will help your concentration and improve your general outlook on life.
How is fitness measured?
It is said that fitness is a state of mind, however, there are a couple of simple calculations that you can use to assess your current level of fitness:
A healthy B.M.I is between 18 and 25.
Fitness is just like any other endeavour, the more you put into it, the more you'll get out of it. It is worth mentioning of course, that there are plans at government level to introduce a fitness test for Leaving Certificate students for which 25 additional points will be given to those who pass. It is said that fitness is a state of mind, however, there are a couple of simple calculations that you can use to assess your current level of fitness:
- B.M.I.: This is your Body Mass Index and assesses your weight relative to your height. It is found by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. For example, if you are 5 feet 10 and weigh 10 st 7lbs, you first of all need to convert these measurements to metric.
A healthy B.M.I is between 18 and 25.
- Endurance: This is a basic measure of your level of fitness and may be calculated in a number of ways. The simple measure I've chosen is where you time yourself over a 3k run. A reasonably fit person should be able to complete this distance in under 16 minutes without suffering any ill-effects.
